Automatic database transitions

Figure 9-1 illustrates an example of a typical DAG configuration that is designed to deliver high availability after a storage or server failure. The DAG contains four member servers, each hosting two active databases. Each of the databases is replicated to two other servers to provide the desired level of protection against an outage. If server ExServer1 fails, which affects the active copies of databases DB1 and DB2, the Active Manager process, running as part of the Replication service, activates the best possible copies of these databases. The passive copy of DB1 might be activated on server ExServer2 alongside the passive copy of DB2 on ExServer4. Following a successful activation, Active Manager updates the RPC Client Access service to reroute user connections to pick up the copies of the databases on ExServer2 and ExServer4. Users connected to DB1 will be redirected to ExServer2, and those connected to DB2 will go to ExServer4.
